About the role
Gerrity’s Supermarkets is a growing regional chain in Northeastern Pennsylvania with ten locations. Founded in 1895 and still family-owned, the company is one of the area’s most respected local businesses. The Payroll Specialist will manage weekly payroll, maintain employment records, and ensure accurate, timely payments while complying with company policies and tax regulations.
Responsibilities
- Process weekly employee payroll.
- Verify employee time records for accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
- Determine hours for overtime, holidays, and paid time off.
- Calculate benefit deductions, tax withholdings, wage garnishments, and retirement contributions.
- Update payroll systems for new hires, terminations, promotions, salary changes, and direct deposit banking changes.
- Oversee employee I-9 verifications.
- Provide management with payroll reports and respond to employee inquiries about paychecks, deductions, or taxes.
- Stay current on payroll regulations and process employment verifications and paperwork.
- Maintain payroll-related employee records and assist with internal and external audits.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- At least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED required; associate’s degree in accounting or business preferred.
- 2–5 years of payroll experience preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel; strong data entry and computer skills.
- Experience with payroll systems such as PeopleSoft, Dayforce, Deputy, Logile, and Paycor preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Understanding of federal, state, and local payroll tax and employment laws.
- Accurate calculation of hours, overtime, taxes, and garnishments.
- Strict adherence to privacy protocols for sensitive employee financial records.
- Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and written skills.
- Ability to hear, speak, and understand spoken English.
- Physical demands: regularly required to stand; use full hand and digit functions; reach with hands and arms while manipulating objects.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, analyzing, interpreting, and understanding English.
