Payroll Specialist

About the role
We are seeking a Payroll Specialist to join our high-growth, fast-paced veterinary company. This role will assist in payroll processing, timekeeping, benefits management, and other support services.
Responsibilities
- Administer bi-weekly payroll cycles in Paylocity for hourly, salary, and 1099 employees.
- Audit electronic timecards, PTO balances, and schedules; resolve discrepancies with managers and supervisors.
- Serve as an internal subject-matter expert for Paylocity modules (Payroll, Benefits, Time & Labor, Expense, Onboarding) and related systems.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws; assist with tax filings and year-end W-2 processing.
- Generate labor distribution reports, compliance documentation, and customized payroll reports for management review.
- Provide training and support to new managers using self-service tools.
- Administer benefits enrollment, eligibility tracking, and carrier connections; collaborate on monthly payroll and benefits reconciliation.
- Support benefit, government, and financial audits.
- Identify process improvement opportunities to increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Perform miscellaneous duties and special projects as needed.
Requirements
- 1-5+ years of payroll, benefits, or HRIS experience in a multi-location environment.
- Ability to work under pressure with a strong sense of urgency and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in multi-state tax regulations, FLSA requirements, ACA reporting, and benefits administration.
- Sharp attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to prioritize, multitask, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with a customer service focus; ability to interact effectively with vendors and employees at all levels.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, accounting systems (e.g., Sage Intacct), and AP systems (e.g., Bill/Divvy).
- Local to Chicago with the ability to work in the office 5 days a week.
Pay
Highly competitive compensation consisting of base salary and performance bonus.
