Payroll Specialist
Location: De Pere, WI | Department: Accounting | Reports To: Payroll Manager
About the Role
Join the PTI team and play an important role in ensuring our professional drivers are paid accurately and on time each week. This role combines attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication as you partner with Operations, support driver payroll questions, and help keep payroll processes running smoothly in a fast-paced transportation environment.
Responsibilities
- Process accurate weekly activity-based payroll for 850+ professional drivers across multiple states, including W-2 and 1099 pay groups.
- Review, validate, and reconcile payroll inputs from UKG, TMW, and related operational workflows.
- Partner with Operations to resolve exceptions, clarify driver activity, and support timely payroll corrections.
- Respond to driver payroll questions promptly and professionally by phone, email, and in-person conversation.
- Use sound judgment to research issues, make timely decisions, and escalate concerns when needed.
- Maintain clear payroll process documentation and support strong internal controls.
- Build expertise in UKG to support payroll processing, system administration, reporting, and process improvement.
- Collaborate with leadership on new or changing pay packages as the business evolves.
- Process garnishments, tax levies, child support orders, and related payroll deductions.
- Support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local payroll, tax, and wage and hour requirements.
Requirements
- Minimum of an associate degree in business or a related field required.
- UKG and/or TMW experience preferred.
- Driver payroll, multi-state payroll, or transportation industry experience preferred.
- Payroll certification preferred.
- Strong Excel skills, including lookups, formulas, reconciliations, and data review.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Clear, professional communication skills with the ability to explain payroll information to drivers and internal partners.
- Comfortable presenting payroll information during weekly driver orientation.
- Sound judgment, discretion, and ability to handle confidential information.
- Working knowledge of tax, garnishment, and federal/state wage and hour requirements.
