This recruitment is open to both external and promotional candidates. Promotional candidates will receive seniority points (.25 per year of classified service, up to 5 points) added to final passing scores. The resulting eligibility list will be used to fill current and future vacancies for one year or until canceled. There is currently one position available in the Payroll Department.

About the Role

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position ensures the accuracy and compliance of reports, time sheets, and spreadsheets; guarantees accurate program and funds distribution; and provides State and District personnel with requested information necessary for timely and accurate payment of district employees.

Requirements

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent, preferably supplemented by coursework in basic accounting and payroll procedures
  • Two years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance of financial, statistical, or payroll records

Public sector payroll experience is preferred.

Knowledge

  • Applicable federal and state laws, Education Code, labor contracts, and District rules and regulations
  • General accounting and payroll auditing, including preparation of payroll reports
  • Methods, practices, and terminology used in accounting and payroll recordkeeping
  • Modern office methods, practices, and equipment
  • Financial and statistical recordkeeping techniques
  • Tax withholding, voluntary deductions, and employee benefits related to payroll
  • Operation of a computer and assigned software
  • Applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations
  • Telephone techniques and etiquette
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary

  • Learning, understanding, applying, and interpreting bargaining unit contract regulations, leave and pay provisions of the California Education Code, federal and state tax laws, retirement system regulations, Governing Board, and County Department of Education payroll procedures

  • Posting data and making arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately
  • Operating a variety of office machines and equipment such as calculators, copiers, computers, and related software
  • Compiling and maintaining accurate and complete records and reports
  • Performing complex payroll work independently
  • Preparing and maintaining financial records and reports
  • Working confidentially with discretion and maintaining confidentiality of employee and payroll information
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Typing or inputting data accurately
  • Meeting schedules and timelines
  • Communicating effectively with diverse groups and individuals

Schedule

This is an 8-hour per day, 12-month position.
