About the Role
The Payroll Specialist is responsible for the effective execution of the payroll process for a multi-state organization with 900+ employees. This collaborative role reports to the Payroll Manager and involves handling day-to-day payroll and tax functions, maintaining accuracy, and serving as a key point of contact in the Payroll Supervisor/Manager’s absence.
Responsibilities
- Process and balance payroll and tax payments accurately.
- Serve as primary or backup for ancillary payroll responsibilities, including benefit/insurance reconciliation and 401(k) contributions.
- Assist with year-end processes, such as W-2 preparation and balancing year-end totals.
- Support the implementation and maintenance of the payroll operating system.
- Interact with the Accounting/GL team and Human Resources.
- Handle other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred, though equivalent work experience may offset this requirement.
- 3+ years of in-house payroll and payroll tax production experience.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
- Excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills, both oral and written.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to collaborate across departmental lines.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, local, and county payroll laws.
- Experience with multi-state, multi-company payroll and tax processes.
- Proficiency in payroll system functionality, report writing software, and MS Office.
- Experience with UKG products (UKG Pro and UKG Workforce Management timekeeping systems) is preferred.
Schedule
This position is based in the Lenexa, Kansas office (Kansas City Metro) and will initially be fully on-site. There is potential for a hybrid work arrangement (3+ days on-site) once settled into the role.
