Payroll Specialist
Location: Kansas City, MO • Full-Time, In Person • Start Date: Immediately
About the role
The Payroll Specialist works with the Payroll Coordinator to process weekly payroll for a multi-state construction workforce—collecting and validating time, computing wages, and resolving discrepancies so employees are paid correctly and on time. This role sits on the corporate accounting/HR team and reports to the Payroll Manager.

We self-perform commercial roofing, architectural cladding, sheet metal, and glass & glazing on projects across the country. Our corporate team supports the crews in the field—and payroll is one of the most visible ways we take care of them.
Responsibilities
- Process weekly payroll including earnings, deductions, and taxes
- Run accurate off-cycle payrolls as needed
- Validate payroll data—time, pay rates, benefits, and job costing
- Process garnishments, deductions, and benefit changes
- Handle prevailing wage and fringe benefit calculations on public and federal work
- Perform payroll reconciliations (registers, tax liabilities, benefits)
- Assist with payroll journal entries and reporting to accounting
- Identify and resolve discrepancies—missing deductions, incorrect pay, timecard errors
- Maintain employee payroll records and proper documentation
- Support audits and compliance reporting
Requirements
- 3+ years of payroll processing experience
- Working knowledge of payroll tax and multi-state compliance requirements
- Experience with prevailing wage and fringe benefits (construction or certified payroll a plus)
- Strong Excel and data validation skills
- Experience with payroll systems—ComputerEase and BambooHR preferred
- Solid understanding of accounting practices and tax law
- Detail-oriented—able to catch discrepancies and errors at a granular level
- Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to maintain confidential information
- Dependable, flexible, and able to adapt to changing needs
- Valid driver’s license
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Primarily indoors, shared office environment
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods working at a computer
- Pass initial drug test and participate in random drug test program
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related field preferred
Pay
$28.00 - $30.00 per hour
Schedule
- Day shift, Monday - Friday
- In person—Kansas City, MO
- Some overtime around payroll cycle deadlines and year-end
