Payroll and Tax Specialist

About the role

Conduct payroll reporting audits, ensure payroll tax compliance, and apply extensive knowledge of payroll and tax regulations across different states in the US. Report to the North America Senior Payroll Manager and ensure the accuracy and compliance of payroll processes and execution.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular internal payroll audits to verify the accuracy of payroll data (input and results) and adherence to company policies and legal requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll and payroll tax regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Research, understand and interpret existing or revised tax codes, laws, or forms and suggest responses to changes in tax law, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Relentlessly review payroll tax processes to identify opportunities for improvement and automation to ensure efficient and compliant tax handling.
  • Aid in the review, development, and implementation of changes or new payroll policies and procedures leading to best practices and solutions.
  • Coordinate the implementation of necessary changes with the internal HR technology team and external vendors.
  • Collaborate with various internal stakeholders and departments on enterprise projects.
  • Work with vendors to research and resolve complex tax issues or discrepancies.
  • Offer guidance and direction on tax topics to the immediate team members or broader HR department.
  • Assist with tax agency audits.
  • Reconcile quarterly and annual tax filings, including W-2 data.
  • Reconcile various General Ledger accounts assigned to the Payroll team.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in payroll processing and tax compliance.
  • Strong understanding of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
  • Canada payroll tax regulations knowledge is a plus.
  • Proficiency in using Workday as the payroll system.
  • Experience with other systems, such as ADP, Experian/CIC+ or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Proficient in Excel (i.e., Pivot Tables, VLOOKUPs, and other formulas).
  • Strong analytical, attention to detail, customer service, problem-solving, organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a high-volume environment.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Certifications such as Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) are a plus.
