About the role

Leading civil construction company seeking a payroll and HR leader to oversee weekly payroll for ~500 employees across California, manage union and prevailing-wage compliance, and provide full-cycle HR support.

Responsibilities

  • Payroll Management: Process weekly payroll for hourly and salaried employees; review and approve timecards, overtime, bonuses, deductions, and union fringes; ensure compliance with federal, California, and local wage-and-hour laws; maintain certified payroll and prevailing-wage reporting; reconcile payroll accounts and labor costs; resolve discrepancies and employee inquiries; document controls and procedures.
  • Human Resources & Employee Relations: Serve as HR point of contact for employees, field leadership, and corporate management; support onboarding, employee changes, performance management, offboarding, and investigations; ensure consistent policy application and maintain confidential personnel files.
  • Benefits & HR Administration: Administer health, dental, vision, retirement, and other benefits; coordinate open enrollment and employee communications; administer leaves of absence (FMLA, CFRA, disability, etc.); act as liaison with providers, unions, brokers, and leadership.
  • Compliance & Risk Management: Maintain expertise in California employment law, wage-and-hour rules, and construction-industry payroll requirements; support workers’ compensation administration and return-to-work programs; assist with audits, certified payroll reporting, and government requests; ensure I-9 and new-hire compliance.
  • Leadership & Process Improvement: Lead, mentor, and develop HR/payroll team members; evaluate and improve HR, payroll, and timekeeping processes; partner with Finance and Operations to enhance workforce reporting and labor-cost visibility; prepare management and executive reports; participate in strategic initiatives.

Pay

$90,000 – $115,000 per year
