About the Role
The Payroll Analyst at UnitedHealth Group plays a vital role in managing employee employment taxes, including setup, research, and resolution of complex payroll tax issues. This position requires a detail-oriented professional who can serve as a subject matter expert, providing excellent customer service and clear communication to internal teams and employees. The Payroll Analyst will handle tax-related analysis, partner with external vendors, and support various payroll operations, including acquisitions, divestitures, and year-end processing. Flexibility to work remotely within the U.S. is offered, with in-office requirements for employees in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. The role offers an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in payroll taxes within a supportive and innovative environment.
Responsibilities
- Research and resolve complex payroll tax issues, including equity and executive compensation
- Serve as a subject matter expert for payroll tax questions and troubleshoot issues as needed
- Perform tax-related analysis and processing for acquisition or divestiture activities, collaborating with vendors for accurate reporting
- Partner with HR Operations to manage Tier 2 payroll tax cases, communicating directly with employees and external tax vendors
- Analyze and report on executive-level compensation for senior management and the Compensation Department
- Maintain accurate tax records within the payroll system and assist in testing tax updates before deployment
- Support year-end processing of W2s and W2c's, ensuring accuracy and compliance
- Identify root causes of errors, recommend process improvements, and implement solutions
- Build and maintain effective relationships with employees, internal teams, vendors, and external partners
- Collaborate with HRIS, Payroll Operations, Total Rewards, and HR teams on payroll and tax-related changes
- Mentor and train Payroll Tax Specialists to enhance team capabilities
- Participate in various projects as assigned, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications
- High School diploma/GED
- 3+ years of payroll tax experience, including all payroll functions
- Knowledge of internal systematic controls related to Sarbanes-Oxley requirements
- Understanding of Gross to Net Payroll and General Accounting Principles
- Strong operational process development skills
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, including pivot tables, VLookups, and automation
- Ability to work accurately under deadline pressure
- Experience managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong project documentation discipline
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, including query skills
