Payments Risk Analyst II
About the role
The Payments Risk Analyst II position at Coinbase is part of the Risk & Fraud team within the Consumer & Business group. This role focuses on identifying and mitigating fraud risk across Coinbase's fiat payment rails, ensuring the company's financial health and safeguarding millions of customers. The ideal candidate will help modernize risk controls and build next-generation fraud prevention systems, contributing to the protection of one of crypto's highest-volume retail platforms.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end risk controls for ACH payments, scaling fraud prevention processes to support business growth.
- Drive detection and mitigation of fraudulent deposit activity through targeted logic against bad actors and high-risk behaviors.
- Lead quantitative analysis of fraud performance, measuring rule precision and recall, assessing financial impacts, and presenting data-backed recommendations to leadership.
- Partner cross-functionally with Product, Growth, Data Science, Risk ML, and Engineering teams to develop and refine risk management strategies, including transitioning from heuristic rules to model-driven and synchronous friction controls.
- Execute investigations into anomalous customer and transaction behavior, proactively identifying and closing monitoring gaps before they result in losses.
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience in risk, fraud, or payments operations, with at least 2 years focused on payments fraud prevention in a fintech, e-commerce, or financial services environment.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience querying and analyzing large datasets using SQL, capable of independently executing analytics projects from start to finish.
- Demonstrated experience using identity-provider data and fraud-detection tools to implement and optimize risk controls.
- Proven ability to measure the financial impact of fraud decisions and effectively communicate these findings to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Demonstrated understanding of ACH payment processing and relevant NACHA rules.
- Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to ensure business-ready outputs and drive improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
