About the role

This position involves the cultivation, selection, and management of a diverse carnation crop, including standard, mini, and specialty varieties. The role requires expertise in identifying and maintaining a wide range of color classes, bicolors, and novelty types to meet market demands.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the entire production cycle for all listed carnation varieties, from propagation to harvest.
  • Manage and sort a comprehensive catalog including Pax, Carn, Mini, and Novelty series.
  • Ensure proper color separation and quality control for solid colors (e.g., Pink, Red, White, Orange, Yellow), bicolors (e.g., Pink/White, Yellow/Red, Purple/White), and specialty mixes (e.g., Pastel, Vintage, Dark).
  • Maintain specific variety groups such as Moon series (Moonvista, Moontea, Moonstrike, etc.), 20st series (Baltico, Chicca, Cuban Love, etc.), and unique novelty lines (Golem, Breanthus, Novelty Kogui, etc.).
  • Implement cultivation protocols for specific varieties including Don Pedro, Esquimo, Kiro, Delphi, and the Mini Barb/Maverick lines.
  • Monitor and manage specialty color mixes including "Mix (sin rojo)", "Mix Pastel", and "Special Mix".
  • Coordinate harvesting schedules for event-specific packs like "V-Day Pack", "M-Day Pack", and "Christmas Pak".

Requirements

  • Proven experience in commercial floriculture, specifically with Dianthus caryophyllus (carnation) production.
  • Deep knowledge of carnation varieties, including standard, spray, and mini types.
  • Ability to identify and differentiate between over 200 distinct varieties including complex novelty lines (e.g., Golem Express, Golem Ocean Song, Novelty Amaris, Novelty Molly).
  • Familiarity with specific genetic lines such as Komachi, Yukari, Nobbio, and Merletto series.
  • Experience in managing both standard solid colors and advanced bicolor/patterned varieties (e.g., Tiepolo, Freya, Romance, Damascus).
  • Understanding of crop timing for specific market windows and promotional packs.

Skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail for accurate variety sorting and color grading.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage large, complex variety lists and production schedules.
  • Ability to train and supervise staff in proper variety identification and handling.
  • Data management skills for tracking variety performance and inventory.
  • Flexibility to adapt to seasonal demands and special promotional packaging requirements.
  • Knowledge of post-harvest handling for different variety types to maximize vase life.
