Paving Superintendent
About the role
Working with government agencies, private contractors, counties and municipalities, APAC Alabama, Inc. produces millions of tons of quality construction materials and paves many miles of highways every year. The role involves managing and coordinating activities of Asphalt Paving Superintendents and crew members engaged in asphalt spreading, rolling, tamping, and patching.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring the safety of crew members and the public who may interact with the job.
- Coordinating ongoing training of Foremen and crew members.
- Calculating resources necessary to achieve production targets according to vehicle capacity, traffic conditions, distance from work site, and productivity of drivers.
- Touring job sites to ascertain progress in meeting time schedules, detect insufficient utilization of workers and equipment, measure slope and material thickness to verify compliance with contracts, and supervise the job.
- Supervising and coordinating crew activities, studying production schedules, and estimating work requirements for completion of job assignments in compliance with or beating the job estimate.
- Maintaining time and materials records necessary to complete daily job costing, prepare progress reports, material used, cost, and adjust work schedule accordingly.
- Maintaining company policy.
- Recommending measures to improve safety, production methods, equipment performance, product quality, and crew performance.
- Directly supervising multiple crews.
Requirements
- 3 to 5 years of related asphalt and paving experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.
- 3 to 5 years of knowledge related to other road construction (milling, surface treatment, base and subbase construction, etc.) would be a plus.
- Ability to read/ comprehend plans and specifications.
- Able to work flexible schedules including days, nights, or weekends as needed.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals to compute rates, ratios, percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to type and use keyboards accurately and possess knowledge of database software.
- Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently.
- Ability to keep time and material records.
- Excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills and attributes.
