About the role

Under general supervision, the Patrol Officer I maintains safety, enforces university rules and regulations, and protects life and property within the University community. Responsibilities include staffing fixed posts, controlling access to restricted campus areas, conducting patrols on foot, vehicle, or bicycle, responding to calls for service, and preparing written reports.

Responsibilities

  • Staff fixed posts on campus, controlling access based on established protocols.
  • Greet visitors, students, and employees in a friendly, professional manner.
  • Respond to routine calls for service, provide escorts, and assist ill or injured persons.
  • Assist in emergency evacuations of buildings or areas.
  • Prepare written reports of work performed.
  • Alert supervisors to traffic hazards or violations that may result in towing or booting.
  • Staff special event assignments, including athletic competitions, homecoming, and commencement.
  • Attend training and departmental meetings; participate in quality improvement efforts.
  • Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to become certified in CPR and First Aid.
  • Customer service orientation with professional interaction skills to de-escalate situations.
  • Understanding of written instructions and ability to prepare written reports.
  • Strong verbal, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
  • Good decision-making, judgment, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to interact professionally with diverse members of the University community.
  • Strong service orientation commitment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of safety and security practices in a college setting.
  • Experience in security, police, EMS, fire, or comparable military duties.

Physical Requirements

  • Work in outdoor and indoor venues year-round, including exposure to extreme weather.
  • Willingness to work overtime, round-the-clock shifts, and extended periods of walking/standing.
  • Gross and fine motor skills, as well as sensory abilities (visual, hearing, speaking, touching).

Tools and equipment used: two-way radio, cellular phone, fire and burglar alarm systems, digital camera, hand-held parking ticket unit, PC and laptop computers, and fire extinguishers.

Pay

$18.98 an hour (non-exempt position).
