About the role

The Baraboo Police Department is seeking CERTIFIED candidates to join our team as a Patrol Officer. Our department strives to be community oriented--protecting and serving our community, while working with community members to address problems. General police functions, include but are not limited to: protecting life and property, general patrol, criminal law and traffic code enforcement, city ordinance enforcement, and maintaining public peace.

Responsibilities

  • Arrest persons with and without warrants and assist in prosecutions as required
  • Investigate complaints assigned and take appropriate actions, as well as conducting any follow up investigations necessary
  • Issue appropriate warnings, citations, and summons to violators as guided by departmental policy
  • Subdue resisting/violent persons
  • Handcuff and transport suspect or prisoners
  • Mediate civil disputes
  • Participate in formal training programs
  • Perform other tasks as needed

Requirements

  • Completion of or current enrollment in a WI LESB approved academy is REQUIRED--(or be eligible for reciprocity through the State of Wisconsin)
  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Be at least 20 1/2 years of age at the time of application submission
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Have no felony or domestic abuse related convictions
  • Have a high school diploma or GED/HSED
  • An Associate's Degree, OR a Bachelor's Degree in any field, OR at least 60 earned credits from a two or four year college institution is desired
  • 5-year education deferment available to approved candidates

Qualifications and Evaluation Process

Supplemental evaluation process includes: oral interviews, psychological profile, medical examination, vision examination, drug screening, and background investigation. Residency within 35 miles required (within one year).

Pay

Starting Salary (2026): $35.06 - $39.70/hour. Currently in contract talks for 2027 and beyond. Starting salary may be dependent on qualification and experience.

Specialty Opportunities

Lateral opportunities available, including pay and PTO negotiation opportunities. Specialty multi-jurisdictional team opportunities include: Sauk County Dive Team, Sauk County ERT, Sauk County Critical Incident Negotiators, Sauk County Drug Task Force, Drone unit, and E-bicycle unit.
