Patrol Deputy

Position enforces the laws of this state and county and provides the residents of the county with a full range of law enforcement and related social services on demand, as prescribed by Oregon law, county ordinance, and judicial precedent. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week union position represented by the Douglas County Law Enforcement Association.

Responsibilities

Essential functions

• Enforce the laws of this state and county
• Provide service of court documents
• Enforce traffic laws
• Operate emergency response vehicles
• Stop vehicles and pedestrians for enforcement of state traffic and criminal laws
• Inspect vehicles
• Serve arrest and search warrants
• Effect the arrest of suspects
• Write reports
• Read and interpret legal document decisions
• Use a computer
• Use a firearm and non-lethal weaponry with a high degree of accuracy as required
• Operate two-way radio system under normal and stressful conditions
• Requires regular and consistent attendance

Marginal functions

• Process large quantities of information to recognize problems and identify solutions
• Analyze law enforcement problems and adjust to prioritize changes
• Remain calm and use good judgment during confrontational situations
• Make decisions in accordance with established policy and procedure
• Testify in court proceedings
• Participate in special enforcement activities (marijuana eradication, DUII task force, etc.)
• Perform support functions for other agencies on a routine and emergency basis
• Respond to nuisance complaints involving noise or animals
• Provide information to the public on miscellaneous topics
• Process found property
• Search for missing persons
• Mediate neighborhood disputes

Requirements

• Must be 21 years of age by the time of certification
• Must be a United States citizen or be one within eighteen (18) months of hire
• Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate of high school equivalency
• Must have an acceptable driving record and the ability to obtain a valid driver’s license
• Must be free from convictions of crime other than minor traffic violations
• Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation
• Must pass an extensive post-offer pre-employment physical assessment and psychological evaluation (accommodation requests will be reviewed on an individual basis in compliance with State and Federal legislation)
• Must successfully pass a post-offer pre-employment drug test
• Must be willing to be fingerprinted and have fingerprints filed with the State
• Visual and hearing acuity must meet the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements as detailed in Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) 259-008-0010(8)
• Must be able to be certified by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training
• Must meet the Minimum Standards for Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer as provided for in Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) 259-008-0010
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Requires keyboarding experience

Qualifications

• Successful recent (within the past twelve months) FrontLine test with National Testing Network (NTN) OR possess a four-year, post-secondary degree issued by an accredited, degree-granting college or university recognized by the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization under the provisions of ORS 348-604
• Recent (within the past twelve months) Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) completed time from an Oregon Law Enforcement organization or authorized testing agency (NTN) OR run the ORPAT with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at a date provided to applicant after successfully passing the NTN exam
• Preference may be given to applicants with public safety experience/training

Work Environment

• Work is primarily performed in the field and from an emergency vehicle
• Requires bending, color identification, gripping with hands and fingers, hearing alarms, hearing voice conversation, keyboarding, ability to lift prone (unwilling or unconscious) persons, operate passenger vehicles, pulling, pushing, reaching, running, sitting, standing for long periods of time, and walking/running over rough terrain
• A considerable amount of driving is required
• Work is performed in an environment involving everyday risks or discomforts including exposure to dust/pollen, extreme outside temperatures, noise, and contagious diseases
