About the Role

A Patient Services Technician performs daily patient service activities in the Patient Services Center (PSC) or as an In-office Patient Services Technician (PST), ensuring accurate and timely specimen collection and processing while interacting professionally with clients, patients, and PathGroup personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers appropriately and treat all customers courteously.
  • Ensure all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
  • Collect specimens according to established procedures, explaining the process clearly to reduce patient anxiety.
  • Dispose of biohazard fluids, tissues, and contaminated sharps in compliance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Complete requisitions accurately in PathConnect and other PathGroup computer applications.
  • Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into the computer with attention to detail.
  • Communicate with clients to verify orders, tests, and billing information (e.g., diagnosis codes, UPIN).
  • Research test and client information using the lab computer system.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
  • Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper storage and labeling to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Maintain required records and documentation, including daily logs and monthly statistics.
  • Perform basic clerical duties such as filing, faxing, and preparing mail, including electronic data entry.
  • Approve time in attendance software and submit accurate expense and travel logs as directed.
  • Adhere to departmental and company grooming, dress code, and lab coat policies.
  • Manage fluctuating patient flow efficiently and maintain a courteous, professional demeanor.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers and clients to foster a cooperative environment.
  • Answer the telephone professionally, incorporating company name and self-identification.
  • Perform duties independently and escalate pertinent issues to supervisors as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-maintained facility; report repairs or maintenance needs.
  • Assist with periodic inventory counts and report shortages or problems.
  • Utilize proper PPE and adhere to laboratory safety precautions and procedures.
  • Align job responsibilities with industry security practices to protect sensitive data and PHI.
  • Comply with the Corporate Compliance Program and all corporate policies, including Privacy and Security policies.
  • Collaborate with other departments within PathGroup and subsidiaries.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
