About the Role
Patient Services Technician performs daily patient service activities in the Patient Services Center (PSC) or as an In-office Patient Services Technician (PST) under the direction of the area supervisor. This role involves interacting professionally with clients, patients, and PathGroup personnel while performing forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Greets customers appropriately and treats all customers courteously.
- Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
- Collects specimens according to established procedures and explains the process clearly to patients (e.g., venipuncture, urine, or fecal collection).
- Reduces patient anxiety by maintaining a calm environment before, during, and after specimen collection.
- Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids/tissues and contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
- Completes requisitions accurately in PathConnect or other PathGroup computer applications.
- Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into the computer with attention to detail.
- Communicates with clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify tests, and obtain accurate billing information (e.g., diagnosis codes, UPIN information).
- Researches test/client information using the lab computer system.
- Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required.
- Packages specimens for transport, ensuring proper storage and labeling to maintain specimen integrity.
- Demonstrates proficiency in proper collection methods and processing of all specimens.
- Maintains required records and documentation, including daily logs and monthly statistics.
- Performs basic clerical duties (e.g., filing, faxing, preparing mail) and electronic data entry.
- Approves time in attendance software by noon on the Monday following the end of the pay period.
- Submits accurate expense and travel logs by the specified deadline.
- Adheres to departmental and company grooming, dress code, and lab coat policies.
- Manages fluctuating patient flow efficiently and maintains professional behavior with clients, patients, and co-workers.
- Answers the telephone in a friendly and helpful manner, incorporating company name and self-identification.
- Performs duties independently and communicates pertinent issues to supervisors for resolution.
- Contributes to a positive work climate and team effort within the department and company.
- Ensures facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair, reporting issues to the Group Leader or Supervisor.
- Assists with periodic inventory counts and reports shortages or problems as they occur.
- Utilizes proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to ensure patient and personal safety.
- Exercises all laboratory safety precautions and adheres to lab procedures as stated in manuals.
- Protects the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information and sensitive company data in alignment with industry best practices and regulatory guidelines.
- Familiarizes with and abides by the Corporate Compliance Program and all Corporate policies, including Privacy and Security policies.
- Collaborates with other departments within PathGroup and subsidiaries.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
