About the Role

A Patient Services Technician performs daily patient service activities in the Patient Services Center (PSC) or as an In-office Patient Services Technician (PST), ensuring accurate and timely specimen collection and processing while interacting professionally with clients, patients, and PathGroup personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Greet customers courteously and professionally.
  • Ensure all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture or specimen collection process clearly to reduce patient anxiety and maintain a calm environment.
  • Dispose of biohazard fluids, tissues, and contaminated sharps in compliance with applicable laws and policies.
  • Complete requisitions accurately in PathConnect or other PathGroup computer applications.
  • Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into the computer with attention to detail.
  • Communicate with clients to verify orders, tests, and billing information (e.g., diagnosis codes, UPIN).
  • Research test and client information using the lab computer system.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
  • Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper storage and labeling to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Maintain proficiency in proper collection methods and processing of all specimens.
  • Maintain required records, logs, and documentation, including daily records and monthly statistics.
  • Perform basic clerical duties such as filing, faxing, and preparing mail, including electronic data entry.
  • Approve time in attendance software and submit accurate expense and travel logs as directed by management.
  • Adhere to departmental and company grooming, dress code, and lab coat policies.
  • Manage fluctuating patient flow efficiently and utilize time appropriately.
  • Display courteous and professional behavior toward clients, patients, and coworkers to promote a harmonious work environment.
  • Answer the telephone in a friendly and helpful manner, incorporating company name and self-identification.
  • Perform duties independently and communicate pertinent issues to supervisors for resolution.
  • Contribute to a positive work climate and team effort within the department and company.
  • Ensure facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair; report required repairs or maintenance to supervisors.
  • Assist with periodic inventory counts and report shortages or problems to supervisors.
  • Utilize proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to ensure patient and personal safety.
  • Adhere to laboratory safety precautions and procedures as outlined in manuals.
  • Align job responsibilities with industry best security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect sensitive data, including PHI.
  • Familiarize with and abide by the Corporate Compliance Program and all corporate policies, including Privacy and Security policies.
  • Collaborate with other departments within PathGroup and subsidiaries as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
