About the Role

Patient Services Technician performs daily patient service activities in the Patient Services Center (PSC) or as an In-office Patient Services Technician (PST) under the direction of the area supervisor. This role involves interacting professionally with clients, patients, and PathGroup personnel while performing forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Greets customers appropriately and treats all customers courteously.
  • Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
  • Collects specimens according to established procedures, including venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal).
  • Explains the specimen collection process clearly to reduce patient anxiety and provides a calm environment before, during, and after collection.
  • Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids, tissues, and contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
  • Completes requisitions accurately in PathConnect and other PathGroup computer applications.
  • Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into the computer with attention to detail to maintain accuracy.
  • Communicates with clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify tests ordered, and obtain accurate billing information (e.g., diagnosis codes, UPIN information).
  • Researches test and client information using the lab computer system.
  • Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test orders.
  • Packages specimens for transport, ensuring proper storage, labeling, and adherence to protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in proper collection methods and processing of all specimens.
  • Maintains required records and documentation, including daily records and PSC/IOPST logs.
  • Assists with compilation of monthly statistics and data.
  • Performs basic clerical duties such as filing, faxing, and preparing mail, including electronic data entry.
  • Approves time in attendance software by noon on the Monday following the end of the pay period.
  • Submits accurate expense and travel logs by the specified deadlines.
  • Adheres to departmental and company grooming, dress code, and lab coat policies, maintaining a neat and clean appearance.
  • Utilizes time efficiently to manage fluctuating patient flow.
  • Displays courteous and professional behavior to clients, patients, and co-workers, fostering a cooperative working environment.
  • Answers the telephone in a friendly and helpful manner, incorporating company name, self-identification, and a helpful statement.
  • Performs duties independently and communicates pertinent information or issues to supervisors for resolution.
  • Contributes to a positive work climate and team effort within the department and company.
  • Ensures facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair, reporting required repairs or maintenance to the Group Leader or Supervisor.
  • Assists with periodic inventory counts and reports shortages or problems as they occur.
  • Utilizes proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure patient and personal safety.
  • Exercises all laboratory safety precautions and adheres to lab procedures as stated in procedure manuals.
  • Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with industry best security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect sensitive information.
  • Familiarizes with and abides by the Corporate Compliance Program and all Corporate policies, including Privacy and Security policies.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments within PathGroup and subsidiaries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
