Under the direction of the area supervisor, performs daily patient service activities accurately and on time. Interacts with clients, patients, and other PathGroup personnel in a professional and courteous manner. Performs forensic and clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Greets customers appropriately and treats all customers courteously.
- Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time.
- Collects specimens according to established procedures.
- Explains the venipuncture or other specimen collection process clearly and courteously to reduce patient anxiety.
- Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids/tissue and contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies.
- Completes requisitions accurately in PathConnect and other PathGroup computer applications.
- Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into the computer with attention to detail.
- Communicates with clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify tests ordered, and obtain accurate billing information (e.g., diagnosis codes, UPIN).
- Researches test/client information using the lab computer system.
- Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required.
- Packages specimens for transport, ensuring proper temperature, labeling, and integrity.
- Demonstrates proficiency in proper collection methods and processing of all specimens.
- Maintains required records and documentation, including daily logs and monthly statistics.
- Performs basic clerical duties (filing, faxing, preparing mail) and electronic data entry.
- Approves time in attendance software by noon on the Monday following the end of the pay period.
- Submits accurate expense and travel logs by the specified deadline.
- Adheres to departmental and company grooming, dress code, and lab coat policies.
- Manages fluctuating patient flow efficiently.
- Displays courteous and professional behavior to clients, patients, and co-workers.
- Answers the telephone in a friendly and helpful manner, incorporating company name, self-identification, and a helpful statement.
- Performs duties independently and communicates pertinent issues to supervisors for resolution.
- Contributes to a positive work climate and team effort.
- Ensures facilities are neat, clean, and in good repair; reports required repairs and maintenance.
- Assists with periodic inventory counts and reports shortages or problems.
- Utilizes proper PPE to ensure patient and personal safety; adheres to lab safety precautions and procedures.
- Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with industry security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect sensitive data.
- Familiar with and abides by the Corporate Compliance Program and all Corporate policies, including Privacy and Security policies.
- Works with other departments within PathGroup and subsidiaries as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
