About the Role

The Patient Service Specialist provides direct, daily operational front office support in a manner consistent with Guthrie Medical Group’s Service Excellence Standards. This role requires self-motivation, flexibility, punctuality, strong time management, and excellent communication skills, with a focus on demonstrating Patient Centeredness, Teamwork, and Excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Greet every patient in a courteous, professional, and timely manner.
  • Answer telephones efficiently, screen calls, take messages, and provide information following Guthrie’s Telephone Standards.
  • Schedule and maintain all patient appointments electronically; verify patient information and assign identifiers to new patients.
  • Edit appointment schedules as directed by practice management.
  • Register patients, verify and update demographic and insurance information, and scan insurance cards into confidential medical records.
  • Verify eligibility for major insurance carriers, including New York and Pennsylvania Medical Assistance, and complete insurance forms, pre-certifications, and referrals.
  • Inform, quote, and collect copayments, deductibles, deposits, or unpaid balances at registration per Guthrie Medical Group policies.
  • Perform daily cash-out and balancing in accordance with the Patient Cash Control Policy.
  • Act as a liaison between patients, physicians, hospital staff, and departments, keeping all parties informed of necessary details and delays.
  • Adhere to departmental and organizational policies, attend required meetings/huddles, and maintain strict confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Assist with additional projects or duties, including quality initiatives established by the organization.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required; graduation from a Medical Office Assistant school preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a customer service-related field, preferably in a fast-paced environment.
  • Medical office experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Comfortable with computers and learning new applications.

Pay

$17.34–$23.96 per hour.
