About the Role

This position is part of the Administration department and is classified as non-exempt. The Patient Service Representative I reports to the Practice Administrator and embodies key character qualities such as attentiveness, enthusiasm, joyfulness, patience, and punctuality.

Responsibilities

  • Receives patients at the reception window and obtains required information/documentation at check-in.
  • Updates patient information (address, phone, insurance coverage, DOB) for each visit and makes necessary changes in electronic medical records.
  • Schedules appointments in electronic medical records.
  • Posts charges and payments at check-out, verifies late or open balances, and reminds patients of outstanding balances.
  • Calls billing assistance to help patients with balance-related questions.
  • Accepts payments and secures daily collections.
  • Balances daily transactions and ensures the waiting area is in good order, calling custodial staff as needed.
  • Follows HIPAA guidelines and Variety Care’s privacy policies.
  • Ensures office equipment is in good working order and notifies staff of any issues.
  • Accepts direction from the Practice Administrator or on-staff Physician.
  • Supports Variety Care’s accreditation as a Patient-Centered Medical Home and commitment to safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care.
  • Works toward the "Triple Aim" of healthcare reform: improving care experience, health outcomes, and reducing costs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Legible handwriting and basic math skills.
  • Ability to work with the public and handle confidential information.
  • Basic data entry and keyboarding knowledge.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff.
  • Ability to work in an active and stressful environment, including handling difficult patients.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of clerical experience.
  • One or more years of customer service experience.

ADA Requirements

  • Able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
  • Able to sit for long periods of time.
