Sustains an environment of intrinsic good will for the practice while providing optimum services to patients. Performs a variety of front office support duties for the department/clinical team.

Responsibilities

  • 50% – Coordination of Medical Office Services
  • 50% – Additional Job Functions, including:
    • Interacting with patients and the public with patience, courtesy, and professionalism in person and on the telephone
    • Efficiently using computer systems for email, spreadsheets, word processing, and medical office management (scheduling, template maintenance, demographic and insurance information)
    • Maintaining accurate records of patient financial transactions, preparing financial reports, balancing cash boxes, and preparing deposits
    • Organizing and prioritizing work within guidelines, responding flexibly to changes in priorities, and maintaining effectiveness in a high-volume, interrupt-driven setting
    • Applying knowledge of medical office procedures, including medical terminology, appointments, records, insurance verification, cashiering, and billing
    • Maintaining logs and files in alphabetical, chronological, and/or numerical order for easy retrieval
    • Adhering to laws, regulations, and guidelines governing medical records, confidentiality, privacy, and HIPAA
    • Navigating health care insurance systems (Medi-Cal, Medicare, HMO, PPO, fee-for-service, county-funded coverage, workers' compensation) to obtain authorizations, schedule appointments, make referrals, coordinate hospital services, complete billing documentation, and explain provisions to patients
    • Identifying services performed using ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding for diagnoses, procedures, and supplies

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED or related work experience
  • Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, patients, and the public
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including email, spreadsheets, word processing, and medical office management systems
  • Typing skills for timely and accurate data input
  • Writing skills to compose clear, concise messages and correspondence using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Bookkeeping skills to maintain accurate financial records and prepare reports
  • Organizational skills to establish priorities and maintain work effectiveness amid frequent interruptions
  • Knowledge of medical office procedures, medical terminology, and filing systems
  • Understanding of health care insurance systems and coding (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a medical setting or hospital
  • Experience with medical insurance verification
  • At least two years of customer service and/or call center experience
  • Experience performing appointment scheduling and patient registration

About the Department

UC Davis Department of Dermatology is a major referral center for Northern California and Nevada, serving patients of all ages (babies to elderly). The department sees an average of 250 patients per day and provides a wide range of services, including:

  • General dermatology
  • MOHS surgery
  • General dermatology surgery
  • Phototherapy and photodynamic therapy
  • Dermapathology
  • Laser surgery
  • Tele-dermatology at multiple off-site locations (Roseville, Davis, Folsom, Elk Grove)
  • Cosmetic services
  • Active involvement in research projects

Pay

$28.97 - $35.93 per hour

Schedule

  • Full-time (100%)
  • 8-hour shifts
  • Variable days, including weekends, as required to meet business needs
  • 100% on-site at Cannery Business Park (HSP110)
