Position: Patient Safety Observer
VirtualLocation: Chicago, IL
Full Time - 36 hours per week
Hours: Nights (7p-7:30a); rotating weekends and holidays required
Required Travel: May float to inpatient units as a bedside patient safety observer

A Brief Overview

Maintains visual observation of patient at all times, either monitoring at the bedside within an arm’s length of assigned patient or using video monitors in the virtual patient observation unit.

What You Will Do

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.
  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the video monitoring software.
  • Maintains visual observation of patient at all times, either monitoring at the bedside within an arm’s length of assigned patient or using video monitors in the virtual patient observation unit.
  • Patient Safety Observer immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance or to alert to an emergency situation.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide the appropriate observation to the patient population requiring observation.
  • Participates in report with on-coming Patient Safety Observer when arriving for shift, and upon completion of shift.
  • Reviews pertinent information and behaviors.
  • Does not provide any nursing care duties (e.g. vital signs, toileting, ambulation, acuity of daily living), unless they are oriented and authorized to direct patient care.
  • Provides patient with explanations as necessary but does not counsel or provide opinions.
  • Provides floor staff with information in a timely fashion when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others.
  • Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues.
  • Assures patient environment safety.
  • Setseks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to appropriate staff members.
  • Demonstrates safe work practice and attitude, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department safety programs.
  • Maintains patient dignity and privacy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Capable of continuous monitoring of up to 16 patients on one monitor at one time and remains alert at all times while on duty.
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset.
  • Able to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes.
  • Able to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Efficient multitasking and able to prioritize simultaneous situations.

What You Will Need

  • High School Required
  • Certified Nursing Assistant preferred
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and remain attentive to patient.
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations, to give verbal redirection to patients and to alert nursing staff as needed.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills required.
  • Proficiency in both verbal and written communications.
