Job Summary

This role provides supervision for assigned patients in the Emergency Department Trauma Center. The main responsibility is to ensure patient safety by closely monitoring them and implementing simple safety measures.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain patient safety through continuous surveillance and simple interventions for patients at safety risk due to psychological, developmental, or behavioral needs.
  • Examples of patients requiring a sitter include those on suicide precautions, with developmental delays, recovering from head injuries post-trauma, or at-risk for interruptions of medical therapies/treatment due to behavioral/cognitive concerns.
  • Perform simple interventions such as distraction, therapeutic play, prevention of pulling at tubes/dressings, re-direction, and re-orientation.
  • Promptly communicate observations, concerns, and needs of the patient to the registered nurse.
  • Perform delegated activities as directed by a registered nurse, including assisting with hygiene/bathing, intake/nutrition, ambulation for elimination, and basic safety procedures.
  • Perform basic activities as demonstrated through the Patient Safety Companion (PSC) skills checklist.

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Less than 1 year of previous healthcare experience or enrollment in an accredited nursing program is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with patients, parents/families, and the health care team.
  • Basic assessment and analytical skills for performing simple patient observations.
  • Functional sight, hearing, and speech.
  • Ability to sit and remain alert for prolonged periods, stand/walk up to 50% of the time.
  • Knowledge of computer and keyboard usage.
