About the Role

Under the direction of the RN, this position performs companionship duties for hospitalized patients to ensure patient safety. The role involves staying with a patient for the duration of the assignment and promoting positive relationships with patients, families, and hospital staff.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously observe the patient’s activity and behavior to ensure a safe and comfortable environment.
  • Communicate regularly with the RN and report changes in patient condition, problems, concerns, and/or visual observations, including behaviors that could result in harm to self or others.
  • Obtain vital signs and communicate findings to the RN, as requested.
  • Assist patients with hygiene needs as appropriate.
  • Assist the RN/CNA with linen changes and repositioning the patient.
  • Support the RN with accurate measurement and reporting of intake.
  • Assist the patient with nourishment/meals.
  • Maintain the patient environment in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Accompany patients to medical procedures and tests, maintaining observation during the procedures.
  • Ensure coverage by the RN or designee prior to leaving the patient unattended.
  • Document duties performed in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to speak, read, and understand written orders.
  • Ability to write reports in English.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR certification required at hire.

Physical Requirements

  • Constant (67-100% of workday) use of arms and hands.
  • Frequent (34-66% of workday) standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Occasional (0-33% of workday) bending, stooping, and squatting.
  • Ability to lift 35 lbs.
  • Ability to push and pull up to 20 lbs.
  • Auditory and visual skills, including color determination.

  • Capacity to cope with difficult situations.
  • Ability to tolerate irregular hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Environmental Requirements

  • Potential risk of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals.
  • Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Pay

Pay Range: $17.00 - $17.00 per hour.
