Patient Registration Specialist PRN, As Needed
Baptist Health is the largest healthcare system serving central Alabama, providing comprehensive hospital-based and outpatient services to nearly 60 percent of the residents in Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore counties.
About the role
The Patient Registration Specialist is responsible for pre-registration, registration, payer identification and verification, referral to financial counseling, and point of service collections. The Specialist ensures that data gathered and entered into the computer system(s) for patient demographic and benefit information is accurate. The Specialist verifies benefits eligibility and limitations, coordination of benefits, and determines and collects the patient's financial responsibility at the point of service. Additionally, the Specialist must understand regulatory requirements including medical necessity determination, Medicare Secondary Payer completion and coordination of benefits, Important Message from Medicare issuance and signage, HIPAA, and EMTALA. This position may have additional duties assigned that are within the scope of the role.
Responsibilities
- Pre-registration and registration of patients
- Payer identification and verification
- Referral to financial counseling
- Point of service collections
- Ensure accuracy of patient demographic and benefit information in computer systems
- Verify benefits eligibility, limitations, and coordination of benefits
- Determine and collect patient's financial responsibility at the point of service
- Understand and comply with regulatory requirements (e.g., medical necessity determination, Medicare Secondary Payer, HIPAA, EMTALA)
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent required
- Associate’s degree in healthcare or business-related field preferred
- Bilingual capability (English/Spanish) desirable
- At least 2 years’ experience in a medical or hospital patient access or financial services environment preferred
- Training experience a plus
- Knowledge of government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid
Skills
