Patient Flow Coordinator (RN) - Emergency Department

Job Summary

The Patient Flow Coordinator will:

  • Ensure care respects individual patient rights, preferences and expectations
  • Participate in policy, procedure and process formulation and decision-making
  • Provide staff performance feedback related to practices affecting patient flow, safety, ethics, quality or standards
  • Round constantly throughout the ED triage area, waiting rooms, and patient rooms to oversee patient flow
  • Serve as a liaison between Bed Management, ED providers, attending providers, nursing, ancillary staff, case management, EMS, and other departments
  • Organize the work environment and patient care teams to achieve departmental outcomes
  • Coordinate patient flow into and out of the department
  • Supervise and coordinate patient placement and flow through the ED
  • Maintain oversight of the ED tracking board for all patients within the department
  • Provide feedback on patient throughput performance to the entire ED team
  • Evaluate healthcare delivery processes in the ED
  • Participate in performance improvement projects and committees
  • Guide and lead staff based on evidence-based facts and data-driven decisions
  • Propose changes to policy and procedure to support needed practices
  • Interact as a liaison with patients and their families/caregivers
  • Aid in departmental emergency preparedness

Required Minimum Education

Associate's Degree in nursing; Bachelor's Degree in nursing preferred.

Required Minimum Certification

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Registered Nurse License
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course preferred

Required Minimum Experience

  • Previous healthcare experience highly preferred
  • Previous RN experience preferred
  • ED experience preferred
  • Charge nurse experience preferred

Required Minimum Skills

  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Proficiency with desktop computer
  • Willingness to be a team-player and self-starter
  • Proficiency obtaining vital signs using manual processes
