About the role

The Patient Financial Counselor position at Piedmont Cancer Institute (PCI) is a key member of the Patient Financial Services (PFS) team. This role supports patients and families in accessing financial resources and works closely with Social Services to provide guidance on state, county, and federal programs. The position is located at one of PCI's clinical offices and reports to the Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) Director.

Responsibilities

  • Aid patients and families in exploring financial assistance options for medical services, referring to Social Services when necessary.
  • Follow up with patients and families regarding financial assistance needs.
  • Collect necessary insurance information for patients.
  • Answer questions about insurance, billing, payment, and collection arrangements, directing patients to appropriate staff members as needed.
  • Discuss estimated costs of therapies with patients and work with the PFS department to resolve account balance issues and establish payment plans.
  • Ensure that required prior insurance authorizations are obtained for diagnostic tests such as PET scans and medical imaging.
  • Create appropriate charge templates by care regimen to assist patients.
  • Aid patients in obtaining “free drug replacement” from pharmaceutical companies as necessary.
  • Collaborate with Social Services to authorize HLA testing for BMT patients.
  • Complete Disability and Medical Necessity forms to assist patients.
  • Work closely with the patient care team, TAs, and other departments to ensure appropriate scheduling of services based on patient support needs.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in social work or related field.
  • If holding an MSW, must maintain current licensure (where applicable) to practice in the state, or be able to obtain a license within six months.
  • Excellent communication skills, including oral and written comprehension and expression.
  • Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with standards for performance improvement and organizational values, such as efficiency and financial responsibility, safety, partnership and service, teamwork, compassion, integrity, and trust and respect.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in health-related agencies or completion of field placement in a healthcare setting.
  • Knowledge of the philosophy of care as it relates to Patient Financial Services.
  • Understanding of current resources and programs to assist patients with financial needs, including Social Security Disability programs.
  • Sensitivity as a patient advocate and clear communication skills to define patients' and family systems' medically-related financial needs.

Pay

$28.00 per hour
