Patient Care Technician Surgical Intermediate Part time Nights

Part-time nights, 6:00 PM – 6:30 AM with rotating weekends.

About the role

Surgical Intermediate Care Unit (2A) is a 26-bed unit designed to provide treatment, care, and service to adult patients with acute medical, surgical, and cardiac conditions specializing in complicated surgeries. The patient population includes, but is not limited to, esophagectomies, whipples, surgical-oncology cases, high-volume liposuction, multi-level spinal fusions, and vascular cases. The unit also cares for surgical patients requiring medication drips not appropriate for the medical-surgical inpatient unit, as well as medical step-down and overflow patients to enhance hospital throughput.

Direct care of 2A patients is provided by registered nurses with an ideal ratio of 1:3–4 patients for step-down level of care. As a Patient Care Tech, you will reflect the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adhere to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and comply with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

• Performs basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
• Assists patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
• Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
• Assists with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly.
• Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking, functioning effectively under stressful situations.
• Utilizes critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work quickly as patient and staff needs change.
• Serves as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
• Answers telephone, intercom, and call lights politely, using appropriate etiquette, and communicates information to the appropriate staff, family, or patient.
• Manages overall unit workflow in concert with the charge RN and/or assistant manager, as needed.
• Performs pre-census and validates daily admission, discharge, and census lists, as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or nursing school students with one semester of clinical completed.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Preferred:

• Phlebotomy experience.
• Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or Graduate of a Phlebotomy course.
