About the role

Join Northwestern Medicine’s CDH Cardiac Intermediate (3A), a 26-bed cardiac step-down unit within the prestigious Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute (BCVI). As part of BCVI, the unit delivers advanced cardiac care typically found only at major academic medical centers, but in a suburban setting. The team cares for patients with a variety of cardiovascular diagnoses, including post-cardiac surgeries and procedures, and has been in the country’s top decile of patient satisfaction for over eight years. Cross-training opportunities to the Telemetry Department are available.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output.
  • Assists patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
  • Reports abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
  • Assists with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking; functions effectively under stressful situations.
  • Utilizes critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work quickly as patient, unit, and staff needs change.
  • Serves as liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
  • Answers telephone, intercom, and call lights politely, using appropriate etiquette, and communicates information to the appropriate staff, family, or patient.
  • Manages overall unit workflow in concert with the charge RN and/or assistant manager, as needed.
  • Performs pre-census and validates daily admission, discharge, and census lists, as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, or nursing school students with one semester of clinical completed.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy experience.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or Graduate of a Phlebotomy course.
