Carilion Children's Pediatrics is a 24-bed unit that provides specialized care to patients from birth to 18 years of age. Patient populations consist of general medical and surgical conditions requiring inpatient services, including diabetes, respiratory illness, oncology, general and neurological surgeries, intestinal disorders, seizures, infectious disease, cardiac abnormalities, and trauma.

Successful candidates MUST attend required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks. These classes are mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care including taking blood pressure, checking oxygen levels and temperature, and assisting patients with bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other basic needs.
• Provide one-on-one care for patients on suicide or safety precautions.
• Perform basic clerical and technical clinical services relating to patient care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort for patients of all ages.
• Assist patients with activities of daily living and document/report observations to licensed staff.
• Transport patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility.
• Contribute to performance improvement activities and participate in unit quality surveillance.
• Exhibit competent knowledge of EMR and assist with chart audits.
• Participate in unit shared governance, organization councils/committees, and unit huddles.
• Support department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments.
• Review medical records for outstanding orders and notify nurses of stat orders and medication changes.
• Order, stock, and organize department/unit supplies and equipment.
• Assist with customer service, including way-finding, answering phones, and connecting with patients and visitors.
• Process equipment between patients, operate/maintain general office equipment, and follow procedures for equipment repairs.
• Lead admission, transfer, and discharge processes with a focus on patient experience.
• Assist in coordination of patient flow using department-specific software.
• Promote process improvement initiatives aligned with unit outcomes and organizational mission.
• Welcome and assist patients/visitors; serve as the "face" of the unit and role model service excellence.
• Demonstrate excellent telephone etiquette and interpersonal skills.
• Monitor cleanliness of waiting and break rooms; perform safety/environmental rounds.
• Participate in the sitter process (if competencies appropriate).
• Assist with maintaining regulatory compliance (e.g., refrigerator checks, glucose meters, code cart checks).
• Perform phlebotomy, nonsterile wound care dressings, saline lock replacement/removal, and colostomy bag changes (if competency-appropriate).
• Maintain patient, staff, and customer confidentiality.
• Interact with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, and ancillary departments.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent education required.
• Previous experience in direct patient care preferred.
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred; required if working in a critical access facility.
• AHA BLS-HCP certification required within 6 months of hire.
• Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for the position.
• Demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development through the life span.
• Ability to recognize and report data reflective of patient status relative to age-specific needs.

Work Environment

• Fast-paced patient care environment requiring prioritization and time management skills.
• May be exposed to infectious diseases, biohazardous/hazardous materials, regulated medical waste, and combative patients.
• Prolonged periods of sitting, visualizing computer screens, and using keyboards may be necessary.
• Physical requirements include lifting, prolonged standing, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking.
• May be required to work at multiple Carilion facilities or support multiple nursing units.

Pay

Compensation Range: $17.39 - $24.35 per hour. Employee pay is based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range does not include benefits or pension plan.
