Fresenius Medical Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) to support and collaborate with Registered Nurses (RNs) in providing dialysis treatment to several patients at a time. This role involves prepping and testing equipment, reviewing treatment sheets, and opening clinics early in the morning.

Job Description

Patient Care Technicians at Fresenius Medical Care support the multidisciplinary team by preparing and operating hemodialysis machines, ensuring a safe and clean environment, and maintaining patient care records. Key responsibilities include:

• Educating patients on dialysis adequacy measures.
• Welcome and assess patients, evaluating vascular access and administering heparin.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

Functions as part of the dialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsibilities include setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting the organization's Quality Enhancement Program (QEP).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Related

• Assist in patient-specific education regarding dialysis adequacy measures.
• Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, and administer heparin.
• Obtain and monitor vital signs, weight, and vascular access evaluations.
• Initiate and monitor dialysis treatments, document interventions, and evaluate patient responses.
• Prepare and document treatment parameters, ensure safety alarms are enabled, and complete treatment sheets.
• Ensure proper documentation of patient treatment and laboratory testing.
• Report significant changes in patient condition and document interventions.
• Conduct machine safety checks and report unusual findings.
• Support patients in self-care and coordinate transitional care.

Staff Related

• Train applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs.
• Maintain environmental integrity and cleanliness.
• Prepare and organize supplies and equipment.
• Monitor patients and document their responses to interventions.

Record Keeping

• Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
• Document treatment data accurately and timely.
• Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure nursing signatures are documented.
• Prepare initial patient charts and compile paperwork for appropriate placement in charts.
• Prepare and print lab requisitions and collect, label, and store lab samples.
• Ensure collection of lab specimens by appropriate lab couriers.

Infection Control

• Collect information for infection control audits.
• Support staff and patients in adhering to infection control practices.
• Follow infection control policies and procedures.
• Provide education to patients and families as allowed by state law.

Transitional Care Unit

• Follow patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional care.
• Assist in patient education and understanding of home dialysis options.
• Order supplies and maintain inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• Requires desk and personal computer work, interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians.
• May involve frequent travel between facilities and various locations within the community.
• Work environment includes air temperature control and moderate noise levels.
• Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials.
• Requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing, bending, pushing/pulling equipment, and lifting up to 40 lbs.

Education and Licenses

• High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
• Must meet CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
• All appropriate state licenses, education, and training (if any) required.
