Patient Care Technician/Nursing Assistant - Psychiatry Per Diem

Under the direction and supervision of the Registered Professional Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurse, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) / Nursing Assistant (NA) provides direct patient care.

Responsibilities

• Assists patients with basic needs including bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, and using the restroom.
• Regularly measures and records vital signs such as temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration.
• Draws blood, urine, or stool samples for testing.
• Obtains blood glucose levels and performs EKGs.
• Performs constant observation and proactive safety rounds; assists with activities of daily living; engages patients in meaningful interaction and activities.
• Immediately reports any changes in a patient’s condition to the nursing staff.
• Maintains safe, clean, and therapeutic environments; responds to patient call bells; answers phones; conducts property and environment searches.
• Orders, maintains, and puts away supplies; performs other duties as assigned.
• Assists patients in moving around, transferring them to and from beds, wheelchairs, and other devices.
• Acts as a liaison between patients, families, and medical staff.
• Provides comfort and reassurance to patients and their families.

Requirements

• Basic Life Support (“BLS”) certification required.
• PCT certification required within the first year of employment.

Qualifications

• High school Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Prior experience in a Nursing Assistant role in a hospital, nursing home, or ambulatory setting preferred.

Physical Demands

• Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies.
• Ability to assist with patient transfers, repositioning, and physical interventions if needed.
• Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, with the use of appropriate safety techniques and equipment.
• Handling equipment and supplies needed for emergency care.
• Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression.
• Providing physical support in restraining or de-escalating patients if necessary.
• Ability to use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision.
• Performing tasks such as documenting patient information, administering injections, or manipulating medical equipment.
• Ability to maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends.
• Capacity to manage high-stress situations with clear decision-making and physical capability.
• Ability to manage the emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises.
• Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action, including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patients in a crisis.

Pay

• Candidates without PCT certification upon hire start at $24.793 per hour (Nursing Assistant rate). Upon completion of Eastern Long Island Hospital’s PCT certification training, the base salary increases to the PCT hourly rate.
• Candidates with PCT certification and demonstrated phlebotomy competency upon hire start at $27.185 per hour.
• Hourly rates increase after the 2-month probationary period to $27.718 (PCT) or $25.326 (Nursing Assistant).
• After completion of 1 year of employment, rates increase to $29.177 (PCT) or $26.659 (Nursing Assistant).

Participation in the PCT Certification program is contingent on employee good standing and sufficient interest.
