Patient Care Technician, Medical Telemetry, Nights
Hourly pay range: $18.84 - $27.32. The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.
About the role
The Patient Care Technician, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practicing Nurse (LPN) and according to established procedures, performs patient care tasks and patient care procedures necessary to provide for the care, comfort, and safety of patients. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age(s) of the patients served on the assigned unit. Responsibilities
- Patient & Visitor Interactions / Customer Service / Hourly Rounding: Interact with patients and visitors, answer patient call lights, answer phones, assist visitors within the facility. Perform purposeful hourly rounding on all assigned patients.
- Patient Safe Handling / Ambulation / Repositioning: Learn patient safe handling skills to assist in the ambulation of patients and help nursing staff with transferring, lifting, and/or repositioning patients utilizing Safe Patient Handling equipment.
- Basic Nursing Care - ADLs: Provide basic care by assisting patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, feeding, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering and responding to patient call lights, bed making, etc., under the supervision of a RN/LPN. Follow policies and procedures related to patient and staff safety.
- Admission / Discharge / Transfers: Assist with room set up, welcoming new patients, room orientation, discharging and/or transferring patients. Provide patient/family orientation to room and hospital according to hospital practice. Transport/escort patients to their destination ensuring safety; regularly update patients.
- Procedures and Treatments: Accurately complete and document patient care activities including ADLs, vital signs, weights (actual weight on admission or as ordered), intake & output, and calorie counts according to policy and procedure. Explain and perform procedures (e.g., urinary catheter removal, ECGs, wound care, and dressing changes under the direction of the nurse). Notify appropriate personnel of patient responses and questions. Collect non-sterile specimens such as routine urinalysis and stool specimens. Accurately perform point-of-care patient blood sugar testing under the direction of the nurse. Promote and maintain skin integrity by reporting patient problems as they occur to the appropriate team member.
- Care Companion / Sitter / Observer: Remain with a patient as a means to keep the patient safe when requested by the RN or LPN.
- Department-Specific Tasks: Support the nursing team by performing indirect patient care activities such as restocking equipment/linens, cleaning equipment, etc. Perform unit support duties including answering and relaying telephone calls, filing and maintaining records, retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments, test results, and so forth.
Requirements
- Eligible to work in the U.S.
- Completion of an accredited certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course preferred.
- Completion of at least one nursing clinical rotation in medical or surgical nursing preferred.
- Current BLS certification for the Healthcare Provider issued by the American Heart Association (required).
- No prior experience required.

- Required to attend an in-depth orientation regarding patient care skill tasks.
- Basic computer skills required.
Working Conditions
- Flow of work and character of duties involves normal mental, visual, and auditory attention much or all of the time with manual dexterity required for sustained periods.
- Requires visual acuity adequate to assess patients and read/record patient charts.
- Requires auditory acuity adequate to converse with patients, members of the healthcare team, and coworkers who may be wearing masks.
- Potential for exposure to blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials, chemicals, and other hazardous conditions which may pose a health risk.
- Able to work under pressure to meet patient care needs.
Physical Demands
- In the clinical environment, must utilize appropriate patient movement equipment for patient-lifting and transfers when the transfer is a non-emergency situation. In an urgent event, may need to assist with lifting up to 50 pounds.
- When applicable, wear an N95 mask/PAPR and other PPE.
- Sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting throughout the shift.
