Patient Care Technician - Medical/Surgical Oncology (4JPP) - 90% Night Shifts

About the role

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the Medical Surgical Oncology Unit (4JPP) within the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division. The unit is part of the NCI-designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and Silver Beacon Award of Excellence Unit, ranking 43rd in the nation for cancer care.

Responsibilities

• Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
• Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated.
• Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
• Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
• Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
• Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
• Turn, position and ambulate patients.
• Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
• Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.
• Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
• Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
• Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
• Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
• May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse.
• Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment.
• Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.

Requirements

• Surgical patients receiving post-op care for laparoscopic and complex oncology related surgeries including: Thyroidectomies, Gastrectomies, Adrenalectomies, Splenectomies, Liver resections, Bowel resections, Melanoma excisions, Pancreaticoduodenectomies (Whipple procedure).

Qualifications
