Patient Care Technician - Medical/Surgical Oncology (4JPP) - 100% Day Shifts, No Weekends

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the Medical Surgical Oncology Unit (4JPP) within the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division. Our Medical-Surgical Services Division is one of the largest in the hospital, with more than 260 of our 811 beds assigned to medical-surgical care settings. The Medical Surgical Oncology Unit is a 44-bed adult medical-surgical oncology and urology unit, part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and a Silver Beacon Award of Excellence Unit. This unit is ranked 43rd in the nation for cancer care according to U.S. News and World Report.

Surgical patients receiving post-op care for laparoscopic and complex oncology-related surgeries including:

• Thyroidectomies
• Gastrectomies
• Adrenalectomies
• Splenectomies
• Liver resections
• Bowel resections
• Melanoma excisions
• Pancreaticoduodenectomies (Whipple procedure)

Responsibilities

• Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
• Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal, and care for patients who are medically isolated.
• Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc.
• Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares.
• Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
• Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
• Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
• Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
• Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake.
• Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output.
• Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge.
• Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
• Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit.
• May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurses.
• Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment.
• Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units.

Schedule

Day shifts (0700 - 1530) Monday - Friday, with holiday rotation and no weekends.

Full-time position, 40 hours per week.

Requirements

Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.

Desired Requirements: CNA certification.
