Patient Care Technician – Intensive Care Unit

About the role

Sentara is hiring a Patient Care Technician to work at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital in Virginia Beach, VA, in the Intensive Care Unit. The position is full‑time, night shift (approximately 7 pm to 7 am). The ICU is a 24‑bed unit caring for trauma, cardiac surgery, vascular, medical and surgical patients, among other high‑acuity cases. The hospital is a 273‑bed facility with a Level III Trauma Center, accredited Primary Stroke Center, and Magnet recognition for nursing excellence.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care under the direct supervision of a professional nurse.
• Support the admissions and discharge process.
• Comply with patient safety practices.
• Observe patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any changes to the nurse.
• Work alongside experienced patient care technicians and RNs in a fast‑paced environment.
• Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills when interacting with patients and family members.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• American Health Associate BLS Certification required within 90 days of hire.
• Must meet one of the following:
  • Sentara Care Partner Certification Program completion,
  • Successful completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program,
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification,
  • National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) certification,
  • Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School,
  • Emergency Services background (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, Paramedic),
  • Current student enrolled in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) having completed at least one semester of RN, LPN, RT or PT,
  • Current work experience within the last
