About the role
Transform healthcare as part of the patient care team within a setting renowned for clinical excellence. Provide nursing care including vital signs, assist with daily activities, and contribute to performance improvement activities.
Responsibilities
- Takes patient blood pressure, checks oxygen levels and temperature
- Assists with bathing, meals, toileting, and ambulation
- Provides one-on-one care for patients on suicide or safety precautions
- Attends required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks
- Works weekends 7-1530 or variable hours during the week
- Performs basic clerical and technical clinical services
- Transports patients, supplies, specimens, equipment, etc. within the facility
- Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities
- Participates in unit quality surveillance activities
- Supports department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments
- Reviews medical records for outstanding orders and notifies nurses of stat orders and medication changes
- Orders department/unit supplies and equipment and stocks/organizes supplies
- Operates and maintains general office equipment
- Follows procedures for timely equipment repairs
- Supports patient flow into/out of area using department/unit specific software and Intranet
- Welcomes and assists patients and visitors; assists with registration
- Serves as “face” of the unit; role models service excellence behaviors at all times
- Communicates effectively with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public
- Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality
- May be required to support multiple nursing units
- May be required to sit with patients on suicide precautions or confusion
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent education
- Previous experience in direct patient care preferred
- Certified Nursing Assistant preferred
- AHA BLS-HCP required within 6 months of hire
Qualifications
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
- Successfully completes orientation and competency validation for position

- Knowledge of growth and development through the life span
- Ability to recognize and report data reflective of the patient’s status
- Interpreting appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements
- Providing care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures
