Responsibilities

  • Takes the patient's blood pressure, checks oxygen levels and temperature
  • Aids patients with bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other basic needs
  • Provides one-on-one care for patients on suicide or safety precautions
  • Attends required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks
  • Performs basic clerical and technical clinical services
  • Assists with transporting patients, supplies, specimens, equipment, etc. within the facility
  • Contributes to performance improvement activities
  • Supports department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments
  • Reviews medical records for outstanding orders and notifies nurses of stat orders and medication changes
  • Orders and stocks department/unit supplies and equipment
  • Operates and maintains general office equipment
  • Follows procedures for timely equipment repairs
  • Supports patient flow into/out of area using department/unit specific software and Intranet
  • Welcomes and assists patients and visitors; assists with registration
  • Monitors cleanliness of waiting and break rooms, and performs safety/environmental rounds on unit and with multidisciplinary team members
  • Participates in the sitter process (if competencies appropriate)
  • Maintains regulatory compliance
  • May be responsible for phlebotomy, wound care dressings, saline lock replacement, and colostomy bag changes (competency appropriate)
  • May be required to support multiple nursing units
  • Interacts with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public
  • Maintains patient, staff and customer confidentiality
  • May be required to work at multiple Carilion facilities
  • Functions as a key member of the health care team and performs tasks as delegated by licensed staff

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Previous experience in direct patient care preferred
  • Certified Nursing Assistant preferred (if working in a critical access facility, a Certified Nursing Assistant is required)
  • AHA BLS-HCP within 6 months of hire

Qualifications

  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Successfully completes orientation and competency validation for position

Skills

  • Knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span
  • Ability to recognize and report data reflective of the patient's status
  • Interprets appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs
  • Provides care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures

Pay
