About the Role
12 West is a 26‑bed telemetry PCU that specializes in the care and management of Hospitalist medicine patients, including Stroke and Neurology patients. The Patient Care Technician provides basic clerical and technical clinical services related to patient care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort, delivering quality service through a team‑oriented, collaborative approach.
Responsibilities
- Provides basic nursing care and performs technical skills for specified age groups according to established standards.
- Assists patients with activities of daily living.
- Documents and reports patient observations to licensed staff.
- Transports patients, supplies, specimens, equipment, etc. within the facility.
- Contributes to Carilion Clinic’s performance improvement activities.
- Actively participates in obtaining desired service‑line/departmental outcomes.
- Assists with chart audits.
- Participates in unit quality activities.
- Actively participates in unit activities and/or organization councils/committees.
- May lead unit huddle; participate in IDR’s (unit‑based interdepartmental patient rounds).
- Provides support for department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments.
- Reviews medical record for outstanding orders and notifies nurse of stat orders and medication changes.
- Orders department/unit supplies and equipment and stocks/organizes supplies.
- Assists with wayfinding, answering phones, and making meaningful connections with patients and visitors.
- Processes equipment between patients as needed (cleans unit‑based equipment and gathers supplies needed to operate equipment).
- Operates and maintains general office equipment.
- Leads streamlined, timely, and comprehensive admission, transfer, and discharge processes, keeping the patient experience as the top focus.
- Assists in coordination of patient flow into/out of the area using department/unit‑specific software and intranet.
- Monitors unit outcomes and metrics and promotes process‑improvement initiatives that add value to outcomes and the organizational mission.
- Welcomes and assists patients and visitors; assists with registration.
- Serves as the “face” of the unit; role‑models service‑excellence behaviors at all times.
- Answers phones and interacts with patients, visitors, physicians, and other health professionals.
- Receives and screens incoming calls via telephone and patient‑call system, routes calls to appropriate individuals, and takes messages accurately.
- Monitors cleanliness of waiting and break rooms and performs safety/environmental rounds on the unit with multidisciplinary team members.
- Participates in the sitter process when competencies are appropriate.
- Assists with maintaining regulatory compliance (e.g., refrigerator, glucose meters, equipment‑room storage, code‑cart checks as assigned).
- May perform phlebotomy, non‑sterile wound‑care dressings, saline‑lock replacement/removal, and colostomy‑bag changes when competency‑appropriate.
Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
- Experience: None required.
- Licensure/Certification: Certified Nursing Assistant required when working in a critical‑access facility.
- Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Successful completion of orientation and competency validation for the position.
Pay
Compensation range: $17.39 – $24.35 per hour. Employee pay is based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. A $7,500 sign‑on bonus is available for external candidates who meet applicable guidelines.
Schedule
Full‑time, Evening/Night shift (United States).
