About the role

As part of the patient care team, you’ll experience an environment defined by a deep commitment to your personal well-being and professional development. This role provides nursing care that includes taking blood pressure, checking oxygen levels and temperature, and assisting patients of all sexes and genders with bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other basic needs. The Patient Care Tech/Nursing Assistant role can include one-on-one care of patients on suicide or safety precautions.

Work setting

This position is located on 11 West – Neuro/Trauma Surgical Unit, a 28-bed medical/surgical unit serving as the primary unit for Trauma/Neurosurgery, Urology, and General Surgery patients. The unit has a dedicated Neurosurgical ACP daily and serves as an alternate unit for orthopaedic surgery, hospitalist, and other medicine patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic nursing care and perform advanced technical skills for specified age groups according to established standards.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, meals, toileting, ambulation, and other basic needs.
  • Appropriately document and report patient observations to licensed staff.
  • Transport patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility.
  • Contribute to performance improvement activities and participate in unit quality surveillance.
  • Exhibit competent knowledge of EMR and assist with chart audits.
  • Participate in unit shared governance and/or organization councils/committees.
  • Support department/unit staff scheduling, including covering lunch assignments.
  • Review medical records for outstanding orders and notify nurses of stat orders and medication changes.
  • Order department/unit supplies and equipment and stock/organize supplies.
  • Provide customer service in way-finding, answering phones, and making meaningful connections with patients and visitors.
  • Process and clean equipment between patients; operate and maintain general office equipment.
  • Lead streamlined admission, transfer, and discharge processes with a focus on patient experience.
  • Assist in coordinating patient flow using department/unit-specific software and intranet.
  • Monitor cleanliness of waiting and break rooms; perform safety/environmental rounds on the unit with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Participate in the sitter process (if competencies are appropriate).
  • Assist with maintaining regulatory compliance (e.g., refrigerator, glucose meters, equipment room storage, code cart checks).
  • May perform phlebotomy, nonsterile wound care dressings, saline lock replacement/removal, and colostomy bag changes (competency appropriate).
  • May be required to support multiple nursing units.
  • Maintain patient, staff, and customer confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span and provide care appropriate to each patient’s age and needs.
  • Sit with patients on suicide precautions or confusion as needed.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment requiring prioritization and time management skills.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent education required.
  • Previous experience in direct patient care preferred.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant preferred; required if working in a critical access facility.
  • AHA BLS-HCP certification required within 6 months of hire.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills required.
  • Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for the position.
  • Must be able to attend required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks.

Physical demands and hazards

  • May be exposed to infectious diseases, biohazardous materials, and combative patients.
  • Physical requirements include lifting, prolonged standing, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking.

Benefits

A $7,500 sign-on bonus is available to external candidates who meet applicable guidelines.

Pay

Employee pay is based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. The compensation range is $17.39 – $24.35 per hour. The range does not include benefits or pension plan.
