About the Role
The Patient Care Technician provides basic patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, ensuring tasks are completed safely and competently in compliance with Mid-Hudson Valley Staffco, LLC policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Patient Care
- Demonstrates ability to provide ADLs (hygiene, toileting, and feeding).
- Recognizes patient’s limitations and initiates appropriate action.
- Assists the registered nurse in providing an individualized plan of care, as directed, and asks for clarification when needed.
- Follows appropriate procedures to ensure patient safety during constant observation assignments.
- Assists with traction and cast care.
- Reports changes in patient’s condition and other relevant information to the RN in a timely manner.
- Anticipates adverse patient outcomes and communicates them to the RN.
- Interacts with team members to establish priorities and ensure timely completion of tasks.
- Takes initiative to assist others and answers call lights promptly.
- Communicates patient/family needs to appropriate staff and anticipates/responds to those needs.
- Patient Related Activities
- Assists with transporting, lifting, moving, and ambulating patients.
- Accompanies patients on discharge as requested.
- Collects, labels, and delivers specimens as directed.
- Performs EKGs or phlebotomy as needed.
- Maintains a clean and safe environment, including whiteboards in patient rooms.
- Reports unsafe conditions, broken equipment, or repair needs to the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager.
- Restocks utility rooms, kitchens, file cabinets, and common areas as directed.
- Transfers patients’ personal effects, including valuables, as needed.
- Self Development
- Seeks learning opportunities and is enrolled in an academic program for a health-related career.
- Accepts direction and guidance from nursing staff.
- Participates in a minimum of 10 hours of in-service education yearly (more if possible).
- Assists in orienting new patient care technicians, including float personnel.
- Serves as a preceptor for newly hired patient care technicians.
- Adapts to changing staff and unit needs, recognizing acuity and taking initiative to assist.
- Completes clerical tasks when assigned (e.g., filing diagnostic reports).
- Recognizes and de-escalates potential conflicts with appropriate assistance.
- Records patient activity and treatments accurately (e.g., I&O, vital signs, Accuchek).

- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of 6 months recent experience in a similar or behavioral health setting, or completion of one clinical rotation as a nursing student.
- Education: High school diploma or GED.
- Certifications: BLS preferred.
