About the Role

The Patient Care Technician provides culturally sensitive, developmentally appropriate patient care under the leadership of the departmental Nursing Director and the supervision of a licensed nurse. This role performs a variety of basic patient care activities and related services necessary for the personal needs of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team with positive interpersonal communication skills when interacting with patients, families, visitors, physicians, coworkers, and staff from other departments.
  • Provides direct support to the nursing staff and providers, following the departmental Director’s and licensed nursing staff’s instructions in delivering quality patient care.
  • Alerts the medical staff to any changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Operates medical equipment safely, such as automatic blood pressure machines, cardiac monitors, glucometers, blanket warmers, and tele consult carts.
  • Collects and transports patient specimens for laboratory analysis as directed.
  • Assists patients with basic care needs, including feeding, positioning, basic hygiene, and oral care.
  • Obtains EKG readings on patients and communicates with providers.
  • Provides one-on-one safety monitoring and precautions for behavioral health or psychiatric patients.
  • Complies with safety, infection control, and performance improvement initiatives to ensure the delivery of quality care and services.
  • Maintains and expands knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Provides basic clerical support as requested.
  • Presents a professional image to nursing, clinical, and medical staff, as well as patients, families, and visitors.
  • Participates in performance improvement studies and integrates performance improvement standards into work-related activities.
  • Attends professional development programs and in-service training, meeting the minimum requirement for continuing professional education.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma in General Studies or a GED state certification.
  • Basic Life Saving (BLS) certification (must be obtained within orientation period if not current upon hire).

Qualifications

  • No required work-related experience.
  • Experience with venipuncture and obtaining EKGs preferred.
