About the Role
The Patient Care Technician provides culturally sensitive, developmentally appropriate patient care under the leadership of the departmental Nursing Director and the supervision of a licensed nurse. This role performs a variety of basic patient care activities and related services necessary for the personal needs of patients.
Responsibilities
- Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team with positive interpersonal communication skills when interacting with patients, families, visitors, physicians, coworkers, and staff from other departments.
- Provides direct support to the nursing staff and providers, following the departmental Director’s and licensed nursing staff’s instructions in delivering quality patient care.
- Alerts the medical staff to any changes in the patient’s condition.
- Operates medical equipment safely, such as automatic blood pressure machines, cardiac monitors, glucometers, blanket warmers, and tele consult carts.
- Collects and transports patient specimens for laboratory analysis as directed.
- Assists patients with basic care needs, including feeding, positioning, basic hygiene, and oral care.
- Obtains EKG readings on patients and communicates with providers.
- Provides one-on-one safety monitoring and precautions for behavioral health or psychiatric patients.
- Complies with safety, infection control, and performance improvement initiatives to ensure the delivery of quality care and services.
- Maintains and expands knowledge of medical terminology.
- Provides basic clerical support as requested.
- Presents a professional image to nursing, clinical, and medical staff, as well as patients, families, and visitors.
- Participates in performance improvement studies and integrates performance improvement standards into work-related activities.
- Attends professional development programs and in-service training, meeting the minimum requirement for continuing professional education.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma in General Studies or a GED state certification.
- Basic Life Saving (BLS) certification (must be obtained within orientation period if not current upon hire).
Qualifications
- No required work-related experience.
- Experience with venipuncture and obtaining EKGs preferred.
