About the role

Under the day-to-day direction of the on-duty nurse practitioner or physician assistant, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) maximizes patient flow through the clinic while providing a stellar patient experience. Responsibilities include performing administrative tasks, electronic health record (EHR) documentation, and demonstrating the company’s core values of respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining a safe, quality-based, survey-ready healthcare environment to meet Joint Commission Accreditation standards.
  • Greet customers or potential patients in the front area or near the clinic.
  • Clean and organize the clinic space daily, including trash removal, logging and putting away supply orders, cleaning floors and examination rooms, and disinfecting equipment.
  • Answer questions while adhering to HIPAA guidelines; consult with the provider for questions related to scope of services.
  • Utilize the Patient Queue, Appointment Tool, and Patient Kiosk systems to manage waiting room flow.
  • Complete patient registration, verify identity using a government-issued source, and place patients under the respective provider’s schedule.
  • Determine method of payment, explain payment options (prompt pay, voucher system, insurance), collect payments, and log them in the EHR.
  • Collect insurance information, if applicable, and log payments in the EHR.
  • Scan appropriate documents or alert the provider if scanning is required.
  • Escort patients to exam rooms, determine chief complaints, obtain vital signs and patient history, and enter data into the EHR.
  • Process patients in the waiting area following clinic flow and provide guidance on registration, wait times, services, and payment methods.
  • Answer phones, respond to questions, return patient/provider calls, and complete daily patient callbacks per policy.
  • Participate in and prepare for off-site events as needed.
  • Prepare weekly supply orders for provider approval, package laboratory specimens, and prepare mail for shipping.
  • If assigned as a float, travel to designated clinics within a specified geographic area.
  • Advanced Patient Care Technicians with completed competencies may assist providers in obtaining specimens for testing and reporting negative labs per provider direction.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Excellent administrative, communication, and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Basic math skills (counting, addition, and subtraction).
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a fast-paced, team-based environment.
  • Excellent customer service, organizational, and task-management skills.

Qualifications

  • Desired: Previous experience in retail, customer service, or healthcare.
  • Knowledge of infection control practices.
