Patient Care Tech (CNA) - Same Day Surgery
This position functions as both a Patient Care Tech (PCT) and Health Unit Coordinator (HUC). A Patient Care Tech assists the patient care team by performing various tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional. A Health Unit Coordinator facilitates unit organization and patient care by assisting in the coordination of patient, nursing, physician, and other health care provider office and clerical activities under the direction of nursing leadership.

Intermountain Health's Same Day Surgery (SDS) and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) provide pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing same-day procedures. Responsibilities
- Prioritize and deliver basic patient care including toileting, bathing, linen and clothing changes, fresh water and ice, ambulating, comfort measures, and other patient needs.
- Assist with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients.
- Provide excellent customer service when responding to patient and family requests.
- Report and record patient care findings and data in a timely manner; report changes in patient condition quickly and secure qualified assistance as needed.
- Based on unit, perform telemetry duties and function as a patient care attendant by monitoring patients, addressing care needs, and involving other team members as needed.
- When working on a clinical unit, take medications from the delivery system to the RN.
- Collaborate and consult with RNs and other interdisciplinary team members for optimal patient care.
- Demonstrate effective teamwork, prioritization, communication, and organization.
- Perform non-nursing duties as delegated (e.g., cleaning, stocking, answering phones, clerical support, providing directions).
- Implement plan of care as delegated and perform assigned duties within Scope of Practice.
- Perform specialized procedures with skill validation and according to regulatory standards.
- Foster a safe environment by complying with safety policies and taking appropriate action in emergencies.
- Answer patient call lights and schedule tests and treatments as ordered.
- Provide access control to visitor entrances for secure units.
- Answer unit telephones and disseminate information appropriately.
- Process, organize, file, and maintain patient and unit records.
- Transcribe physician orders and act as unit receptionist.
- Organize, stock, and maintain supplies on the unit.
Requirements
- Current Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) in the state of practice.
- Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
- Demonstrated basic computer literacy skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
At the time of hire, Utah candidates must meet one of the following:
- Certified Nursing Assistant Certification in the state of Utah (if expired, must be renewed before start date).
- Completion of a recent Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program (within the past year); CNA certification must be obtained within 120 days of hire.
- Completion of a Fundamentals of Nursing Course with a passing grade within the past two years; CNA certification must be obtained within 120 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of CNA experience.
- CNA experience in a hospital setting.
- Current enrollment in nursing school.
- Experience as a Secretary in a hospital.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology.
- Basic computer skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
- Frequent interactions requiring verbal communication, hearing, and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, especially during emergencies.
- Manual dexterity to manipulate complex and delicate equipment, including frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing information, and medication preparation.
- Ability to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients, including bending to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining/distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, often in crowded and busy rooms.
- May be expected to stand in a stationary position for extended periods.
Schedule
Part-time, 18 hours per week, 9-hour shifts. Days, Monday through Friday — no weekends or major holidays.
Pay
Starting at $18.40 per hour, based on patient care experience.
