Patient Care Tech (CNA) - Same Day Surgery

Location: McKay-Dee Hospital – Ogden, Utah | Department: Same Day Surgery / Recovery Room

About the Role

Intermountain Health's Same Day Surgery (SDS) and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) provide pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing same-day procedures. As a Patient Care Technician, you will function as a clinical support partner, assisting the patient care team by performing various tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional. Additionally, you may assume the responsibilities of a Health Unit Coordinator.

Schedule

• PRN / As-needed hours per week
• 10–12-hour shifts
• Monday–Friday, variable day/evening schedule
• Occasional on-call, weekend, and holiday requirements (rarely called-in)

Pay

Starting at $18.40+ per hour (based on patient care experience). Hourly range: $18.40 – $23.92.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize and deliver basic patient care, including toileting, bathing, linen and clothing changes, fresh water and ice, ambulating, comfort measures, and other patient needs, while providing excellent customer service when responding to patient and family requests.
• Report and record patient care findings and data in a timely manner. Report changes in patient condition quickly and secure qualified assistance as needed.
• Perform telemetry duties as required based on the unit, and function as a patient care attendant by monitoring patients, addressing patient care needs, and collaborating with other members of the patient care team.
• Transport medications from the delivery system to the RN as required when working on a clinical unit.
• Collaborate and consult with the RN and other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient care.
• Assume the responsibilities of a health unit coordinator, including answering phones, transcribing physician orders, managing unit records, organizing, stocking, and maintaining unit supplies.
• Implement plan of care as delegated.
• Perform assigned duties within Scope of Practice.
• Perform specialized procedures with skill validation and according to regulatory standards.
• Foster a safe environment by complying with safety policy and taking appropriate action in an emergency.

Requirements

• Current Nursing Assistant Certification (CNA) in the state of practice.
• Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
• Demonstrated basic computer literacy skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications

At the time of hire, Utah candidates must meet one of the following:

• Certified Nursing Assistant Certification in the state of Utah. If CNA certificate is expired, it must be renewed before the start date.
• Completion of a recent Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program (completed within the past year). Verification of program completion is required. CNA certification must be obtained within 120 days of hire.
• Completion of a Fundamentals of Nursing Course with a passing grade within the past two years. Official transcript is required. CNA certification must be obtained within 120 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior CNA experience or applicable healthcare experience.

Physical Requirements

• Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication as well as hearing and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy, including frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, and medication preparation.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, including heavy items.
• Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.).
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
• For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle, which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
