About Children's Minnesota

Children's Minnesota is one of the largest pediatric health systems in the United States and the only health system in Minnesota to provide care exclusively to children, from before birth through young adulthood. An independent and not-for-profit system since 1924, Children's Minnesota serves kids throughout the Upper Midwest at two free-standing hospitals, nine primary care clinics, multiple specialty clinics, and seven rehabilitation sites. As The Kids Experts™ in the region, Children's Minnesota is regularly ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a top children's hospital.

Department Overview

Our neonatal program is the largest in the Midwest, providing the full scope of care for infants needing intensive care. At the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Children's Minnesota St. Paul Campus, an interdisciplinary team of over 500 professionals cares for babies born prematurely, those with birth defects, genetic disorders, medical disorders, and any baby needing surgery. The unit provides complex care including hemodynamic monitoring, critical medication management, maintenance of systemic perfusion, and management of organ failure.

The Children's St. Paul NICU is a 62-bed unit providing level 2 and level 3 neonatal care, allowing for continuity of care from admission to discharge. It is part of the Mother Baby Center in St. Paul at United Hospital, which includes high-risk delivery services. The team balances a highly technical skill set with a family-centered approach, relying on teamwork, open and respectful communication, and promoting an environment that encourages learning and professional growth.
