Position Summary

The ED Patient Care Technician is an integral member of the Emergency Department team, graded based on licensure and years of experience. The PCT provides direct patient care and supports nursing care in other areas, including inpatient and outpatient settings. They also assist with medical records and clerical duties.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Current AEMT, LPN, or LNA license in the State of New Hampshire
  • Prior experience as an EMT preferred
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills
  • Basic computer systems knowledge required

Essential Functions

  • Completes required clinical competencies for a Patient Care Technician
  • Demonstrates current clinical competence and excellence in clinical practice
  • Accepts responsibility and accountability for clinical practice
  • Adheres to the Standards of Practice
  • Affirms accurate charging for supplies used for patient care
  • Identifies and reports Risk Management situations
  • Brings recommendations on new products and cost-saving measures to the RN or Department Manager
  • Reassesses vital signs at least every two hours
  • Documents findings and communicates them to the RN
  • Obtains specimens of blood and body fluids as ordered by the RN
  • Performs 12 lead EKGs
  • Maintains aseptic technique and ensures safe disposal of sharps
  • Documents all pertinent information on the patient’s medical record
  • Participates in Code Blue and trauma resuscitation events
  • Cleans and restocks patient care areas after each patient’s discharge
  • Transports patients to and from other departments safely
  • Takes initiative to perform clerical duties such as phones, order processing, ordering supplies, and restocking
  • Coordinates and performs computer support and clerical functions to process medical records and physician dictations
  • Ensures completion of medical records and prompt forwarding of records to HIM for coding and processing
  • Participates in the Radiology department to process X-ray films when requested
  • Participates actively in all department meetings and attends at least 80% of meetings
  • Accepts and satisfactorily completes miscellaneous duties as requested
  • Follows appropriate infection control practices and precautions
  • Participates on CQI teams and implements new and ongoing quality improvement activities
