Position
Position: Full-Time Patient Care Technician
Department: 5 Pavilion Orthopedic Unit
Location: UPMC Passavant
Shifts: Rotating shifts; 36 hours per week. Shifts will be discussed further in the interview.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care under RN direction, including assisting with ADLs, procedures, and therapies
- Perform core PCT responsibilities, including vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry application, specimen collection, bladder scans, EKGs, and basic dressings
- Aid with unit and patient needs (e.g., responding to call lights, meal delivery, patient transport, and monitoring)
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment while following infection control and safety protocols
- Monitor patients and report changes in condition or equipment issues promptly
- Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed
- Support unit operations by stocking supplies and assisting with department activities
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to support coordinated care
- Demonstrate professionalism by building positive relationships, supporting team initiatives, and seeking opportunities for growth and development
- Respond to emergent situations and provide patient supervision or assistance as appropriate
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One of the following:
- One year of patient care experience
- Enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare program with at least one completed clinical rotation
- Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
- Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician training
- Completion of basic information systems training
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Medication access limited to distribution to licensed nursing staff
Licensure/Certification/Clearances
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification (AHA-compliant with skills demonstration) required within 30 days of hire
- Act 34 Criminal Clearance
